This European doppelbock is a big, malt-driven lager typically served to celebrate the Lenten season.

Think of a rum-soaked fruitcake riddled with prunes, raisins, dark chocolate and a touch of molasses.

Primator Double Bock is made by Primator A.S., a brewery in the Czech Republic dating to 1872. This version of a classic doppelbock, a style that originated near Munich in the 17th century, is sweeter than many on the market.

The beer features five different kinds of malt, but there’s a nice, bitter edge to the finish, thanks to generous hopping. At 10.5 percent alcohol by volume, it’s a beer meant for sharing. Seek it out at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in south Lakeland.
