Rescuers found the body of a missing boater Tuesday a few hours after receiving reports of calls for help on a sandbar, authorities said.

The 42-year-old man apparently drowned while trying to recover a 22-foot fishing boat that drifted away with the tide, Lee County sheriff's Sgt. Larry King said.

His companions, a man and a woman, were left stranded on a sandbar on Pine Island Sound near Fort Myers. A relative reported them missing around 4 a.m. Someone reported their calls for help from the sandbar a few hours later and they were rescued. The third boater's body was found a few miles away about 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities are withholding the name of the dead boater until his family can be notified.
