BARTOW — An Orlando couple arrested in connection with the vicious stabbing death of a former professional golfer were indicted by a grand jury on murder charges today.

Colin B. Zieler of Houston, 31, who had been living in Lakeland for about a month while doing contract work for Progress Energy, was stabbed May 17 in an early morning assault that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described as one of the most vicious he’d ever seen.

Zieler’s ex-girlfriend, Heizel Gonzalez-Martinez, 26, the mother of one of his children, was indicted on charges of second-degree murder with a weapon, and accessory after the fact. The indictment said she “did unlawfully kill Colin Brendan Zieler, a human being, by stabbing and/or cutting...although without any premeditated design.”

Her current boyfriend, Alejandro Ferrer, 25, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder. The indictment said Ferrer used premeditation when he killed Zieler.

Gonzalez-Martinez called Zieler in the early morning hours of May 17, and he came out of his apartment to talk to her, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

When Zieler went outside, Ferrer immediately began stabbing and slashing him with a foot-long knife and chased him through the apartment complex, stabbing him until he collapsed, the Sheriff’s Office said. Zieler was dead when deputies arrived and had suffered 41 stab wounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
