SAO PAULO - A prominent Brazilian rabbi arrested on shoplifting charges in Florida has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to take an anti-shoplifting course, a court spokesman said Wednesday.

Henry I. Sobel, who for more than 30 years led the Sao Paulo Jewish Congregation, was sentenced Tuesday, said Michael Edmondson, a spokesman for the State Attorney's Office in Palm Beach County.

Sobel was arrested in March on three counts of theft on suspicion of stealing $680 worth of ties from several upscale stores in Palm Beach.
