A hawk, which decided to land on a live circuit in a substation at the Larson Generating Plant on Memorial Boulevard, knocked out power to some areas of North Lakeland and part of the downtown area for 25 minutes just before 11 a.m. today.

Jim Stanfield, managing director of Lakeland Electric, said the outage was a safety measure when a relay detecting the short shut down and transferred power to another substation.

Some downtown restaurants were knocked out of power briefly before the noon lunch rush and traffic lights were reported out. Power to all areas was restored before 11:30 a.m., Stanfield said.
