LAKELAND A homeless man was attacked and robbed by several men in downtown Lakeland early Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident happened in the 800 block of North Kentucky Avenue near Talbot House Ministries, a shelter for the homeless, about 5 a.m., according to a Lakeland Police report.

Gary Hawkins, 49, was sleeping on the sidewalk in front of Talbot House when two or three men began kicking him and hitting him in the head.

When he rolled away to protect himself, one of the men reached inside his shirt pocket and took what money he had, the report stated.

Hawkins could not see any of his assailants clearly and huddled once the attack stopped, not looking up for several minutes until he was certain the men had left.
A search of the surrounding area did not yield any suspects, who would face charges of strong-arm robbery, police said.

Hawkins was treated for cuts and bruises at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and released.

Another homeless man, 63-year-old Curtis Johnson, was beaten by four Lakeland teenagers May 18 as he slept behind a shop on Memorial Boulevard near downtown Lakeland, police have said. Those teens were caught by undercover Lakeland Police officers.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Lakeland Police at 863-834-6900.
