Dr. Marsha Lynn Hoffman-Vaile, a former Lakeland dermatologist convicted of health-care fraud, was sentenced today to 78 months in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution and forfeiture costs.

Hoffman-Vaile must pay $504,000 in restitution to Medicare, insurance companies and some patients within 90 days. She was also ordered to pay $705,161.87 to the federal government for the amount she overbilled Medicare.

Federal Judge Susan Bucklew sentenced Hoffman-Vaile about 3:30 this afternoon in federal court in Tampa after an all-day sentencing hearing.

Hoffman-Vaile was convicted in U.S. District Court in Tampa last September of 44 counts of health-care fraud, 44 counts of submitting false claims and one count of obstruction of justice.

Federal prosecutors said Hoffman-Vaile exaggerated the types of treatment patients needed when she treated them for skin cancer and overbilled Medicare for the services she provided.
