BARTOW - Bartow High School is ranked 167 in Newsweek magazine's latest list of the best 1,257 high schools in the U.S.

The story, titled "Education: Why They Are The Best" can be read at the Web site .

According to the story in Monday's issue of the magazine, the top 1,000 schools on the list are considered among the top 5 percent in the country. Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by the publication, which examines the number of advanced placement, international baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Bartow High School houses an International Baccalaureate School and Summerlin Academy, a military high school that is a school of choice.

Bartow has moved up in the rankings each year the magazine has done the story. Bartow High School's Newsweek rankings are:

n 2006: 176 out of 1,236 schools

n 2005: 253 out of 1,043 schools

n 2004: No story published in 2004

n 2003: 459 out of 806 schools
