WINTER HAVEN - Polk Community College will host a baseball camp June 25-29 and July 16-20 at the Winter Haven campus.

Each camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost for the camp will be $80, including a camp T-shirt. The camp is open for children ages 6-12.

PCC baseball coaches Joe Arnold and Brian Kraft, and PCC baseball players will conduct pitching, batting and running drills at the covered batting cage and other PCC facilities. Campers should bring money to purchase lunch and snacks at the concession stand or bring their own lunch.

PCC basketball camp will start June 25
WINTER HAVEN - Polk Community College will host a basketball camp for children in grades 1-9 from June 25-29.

Entry fee for the week is $85 and each camper will receive a basketball and Polk T-shirt. Each day will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 1 p.m.

The camp specializes in individual instruction. PCC coach Matt Furjanic and staff will teach the ins and outs of basketball, including shooting, passing, ball handling, defense and rebounding.

Post 8 sweeps doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN - The Winter Haven American Legion Post 8 C team swept a doubleheader with Lakeland on Wednesday night 8-4 and 4-1.

Nathan Cruz and Dustin Myer paced the offense in game one with two hits each. Myer added three RBI on the day. Nathan Mann picked up the victory.

In game two, Alex Albritton, Travis Crank and Luke Razzano each had a hit and an RBI. Andrew Albritton earned the victory.

The Post 8 C team will host a tournament on Saturday. Lake Wales, Auburndale and Lake Gibson are scheduled to play.

Shields pitches Devil Rays to victory

ST. PETERSBURG - James Shields settled after a shaky first inning to throw the second complete game of his career, Elijah Dukes and Brendan Harris backed the right-hander with solo homers for Tampa Bay.

Shields (4-0) yielded three runs and five hits in the opening inning, then allowed just three runners to reach base over the next eight innings. He earned his first win in nearly four weeks.

Dukes hit his 10th homer of the season in the fifth and Harris snapped a 3-3 tie against left-hander Nate Robertson (4-5) in the sixth. Jorge Cantu, Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton also drove in runs for the Devil Rays, who have come from behind in 19 of their 22 victories.
