Walt Disney World Recognition

Walt Disney World Resort cast members who are alumni of Polk State College recently hosted a reception to recognize Eileen Holden, the former president of Polk State, for her decadelong service to both the college and the community. George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort and a Polk State alumnus, presented Holden with a Mouscar, the company's most recognizable honor, typically awarded to cast members for long-term exemplary service to the company and the community as a whole. A proclamation to bestow the award was read by Walt Disney World Ambassador Nathaniel Palma.

Carnegie Hall Performance

The Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church Chancel Choir will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Nov. 19 in a performance of Mark Hayes' "International Carol Suite." The group of 18 singers and six spouses will spend five days and four nights in New York.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

StandUP Polk and Polk County law enforcement agencies collected an estimated 1,558 pounds of human and pet medications for safe and proper disposal, bringing the total for collections held in Polk County to more than 13,558 pounds recovered dating to 2010.

Puerto Rico aid

Dr. Yaritza Arriaga-O'Neill and Dr. Melanie Melendez from Poinciana Medical Center recently partnered with the Casa Christiana Jesus Worship Center to deliver medical supplies to Puerto Rico in response to Hurricane Maria.

Hallelujah Night

Family Worship Center recently held its annual Hallelujah Night. The celebration for kids who attend the center has been held for more than 30 years, and was opened to the public this year.

Pughsville Women's Summit

The  Pughsville Women's Summit was held Oct. 14 at Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven.  Nancy C. Simmons-Henderson, one of the founders of the Pughsville Foundation, was honored. She is aprt of the name of Pughsville Scholarship at Polk State College: Althea Mills/Nancy C. Simmons-Hendereson. Other honorees were Theodosia Atkins, Anny Darby, first black female city commissioner; Angeline Davis, 2001 Winter Haven Chamber Bankers Cup winner; Modie Rawls and Julia Mae Tyson. Also recognized were women from Pughsville in law enforcement: Carol Bradley was recognized as being the first black female city police officer and Lucretia Smith-Hogan was the first black detention deputy. A candle light memorial for deceased women of Pughsville was held.

Sorority Reaching the Community

Members of Omicron Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recently held two events to educate students and families. On Sept. 30, the ASEND orientation was held at Polk State College. ASCEND, an acronym for self-awareness, communication, engagement, networking and development, assists high school students for college and career readiness. Students from Harrison School for the Arts and the Collegiate High School were in attendance. The program is coordinated by Swanyetta Perry and Margarita Merriweather.

On Oct. 7, the Mental Health Committee held "Conversations: Breaking the Silence" at the Lakeland Public Library, Larry R. Jackson Branch. The event was to educate blacks and end the stigma associated with mental health issues. The program was chaired by Rhonda Coleman, and mental health professionals Rico Walker, Amanda Neil, Stacy Howell, Jeanne Robinson and Kyle and Deloris Nelson-Street participated in the event and chapter president Meesha Downing closed the event.

Happy birthday to Martha Laurend on Nov. 14, Todd Moses and Michelle Crawford Broxton who turns 43 on Nov. 16. Happy belated birthday to Shirley Whitney who turned 82 on Oct. 28.
