I totally agree with Direct Gates's editorial about Bowe Bergdahl getting off virtually scot-free after deserting his post ["A deserter failed to get his just desserts," Nov. 4].
Everyone seems to have forgotten that he deserted to join the Taliban. He was not captured. Apparently after five years with them, he decided he had made a bad mistake.
Many heroic soldiers were badly injured while searching for him. Of course, a psychiatrist had to be involved claiming that Bergdahl was basically incompetent because of childhood mistreatment and should not be sent to prison.
What a sad outcome and disappointment for all the real soldiers out there who put their lives on the line every day even for useless people like Bergdahl. It will be interesting to see how he lives his life out.
