Garthwaite grinded-and-glided his way to a 12th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at the FHSAA Class 4A swimming and diving state finals.

STUART — Colby Garthwaite set a school record and then took a curtain call at night.

The George Jenkins junior grinded-and-glided his way to a 12th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at the FHSAA Class 4A swimming and diving state finals at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Center on Friday.

“I was kind of tired and didn’t know how I was going to swim, but I always come out and put down the work and swim strong,” Garthwaite said. “I finished strong enough to drop a spot from my seed. It was great overall. Next year, I want to make it into the top eight.”

He finished with a 1 minute, 00.70 second time, the second-best of his career because he landed his best time a few hours earlier in prelims when he finished 14th to reach the consolation finals, setting a Jenkins’ school record and a personal best time of 1:00.62.

“It feels great to break a record and to come out here and swim against the fastest people in the state,” Garthwaite said.

Jenkins coach Jenn Gosline said she couldn’t be more proud of Garthwaite because he has come so far in just one year and she is now wondering what he can do next season.

“We have one-more year to see how much he has. He swam great (in prelims). He went out at 28 and came back at 32. We were hoping for fast, we just didn’t know how fast," she said.

Gainesville Buchholz won its third-consecutive girls state title with 360.5 points. Buchholz set six state records in the process which included the 100 fly, 200 medley relay, 100 breast, 400-free relay and the 200-free relay twice — first in prelims and the again in the finals.

Sarasota Riverview won its fourth-consecutive boys state championship racking up 278.5 points

The 3A state finals are slated for today with 30 Polk County athletes qualifying, including Direct Gates’s 2016 girls co-swimmer of the year Kelly Schmaedeke from Lakeland, who will be competing in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Kathleen’s Reston Bartlett and Winter Haven’s Ethan Olivia will be going head-to-head in the 50-free prelims. Oliva qualified with a 21.96 and Bartlett with a 22.47.
