FROSTPROOF—The Frostproof girls collected six first-place finishes on their way to winning the District 1A-12 weightlifting meet at the Jim Boyd Gymnasium on the campus of Frostproof High School Wednesday.

Their six first-place finishes propelled the Bulldogs 55 points ahead of runner-up Lake Wales and 64 points ahead of third-place Mulberry. Frosproof also won the Polk County championship Saturday.

The Frostproof winners were Valentina Escalante (110), Amaya Mosley (119), Ashlyn Smeal (129), Gabrielle Sams (139), Cheyanne Canner (154), and Alaina Smeal (199).

Ashlyn Smeal a junior, lifted 105 in the bench and 125 in the clean and jerk.

“I made it to the state meet last year lifting in the 119 class,” said Smeal. “Going up to the 129 weight this year, I know I will have to do better. I was really hoping to go higher today, but it just didn’t happen for me.”

“We had some goals today, and I felt like if we met them it would be a good night, said Frostproof coach Becky Mendes. "I am really proud of the girls for doing what I have asked them to do. Through their hard work it is paying off for them.”

Fort Meade’s Emma Respress took the 101 division with a total of 215 pounds. The  freshman began lifting when she was in the seventh grade.

“I have moved down to the 101 class this year, and I’m excited, hoping to see if I can make it to the state meet,” said Respress.

Lake Wales had victories by Destiny Cuevas (169) and Ta’Miracle Powell (unlimited). Mulberry got a win from Keilani Davis (183).

The top six lifters of each weight class earned an automatic spot in the regional weightlifting meet which will be held at Frostproof, Jan. 17.
